A custom typeface and motion piece based on the grid-settings used in a random bitmap generator. This project evolves on the typeface created for my thesis project What Is This?
Emergence explores the influence of randomness within a structure, demonstrating the possibility for meaning to cohere out of chaos. Deeper meaning is created through the interaction of individual components; As the pixels form letters, which form words, meaning extends beyond the meaning of the pixels alone.
The background music is Disparition's The Stolen and Perverted, layered with white noise.
I began this process by considering the concept of "emergence", and wrote a script before creating storyboards. After storyboarding, I edited my work while animating in After Effects, refining a structure for the motion piece through rules of consistency. For example, all compositions are focused around a central point, with short words always being placed in the centre. In terms of movement, the transitions between words are slightly overlapped, and new words appear either in the position of the previous word, or radially framing it. Also, individual elements are never seen to move across the screen; they appear and disappear in the same position, with movement created via the transition between two elements.
After following the storyboards to animate the text layer, I animated the movement of the background to match the movement of the letterforms. The background texture was created using footage taken of a cloudy sky as viewed though a sunroof while driving on the highway. I re-coloured, mirrored, and distorted this footage to complement the symmetrical layout of the text layer.
While developing the visual style for this piece, I was inpsired by the alien aesthetics of the 2018 film Annhiliation.
